The Life of a Leader of the Revolution in Nepal is in Danger -

Free Comrade Gaurav !

Report from Berlin:

When Chandra Prakash Gajurel, also known as Comrade Gaurav, was arrested by the Indian authorities on 20 August, a wave of outrage spread throughout the world. The WPRM (Europe) called for a campaign to win the comrade's freedom.

We, the Berlin chapter, have joined this campaign. Within a few days over 200 signatures were gathered, some from such well-known persons as Mr. Gerhardt Löwenberg, a communist resistance fighter from the Nazi era, and lawyers and journalists, and presented to staff members of the Indian Embassy by two delegates. stresemannstreet_in_berlin_demo_for_gaurav Aware of the number of internationally recognized human rights violations committed by the Indian authorities, the embassy staff member at first thought the delegation was from Amnesty International. Although the delegates were not from Amnesty, they were not able to ease the conscience of this staff member, as they had come to inform her that people in this country were also very concerned about the life of Mr. Chandra Prakash Gajurel, hold the Indian government responsible for his well-being and call upon it to release him. They called the staff member's attention to this fact and asked her to report that many people were following the actions of the Indian government closely and that in this case, if Mr. Gajurel were to be extradited, this would even further damage the reputation of the Indian government in the eyes of the people.

posdamerplatz_gaurav_demo Although this was an important action, it was by no means the only one. There was a good repsonse and a great deal of interest in both the trial and the People's War in Nepal. Some cafes and small stores in Kreuzberg showed their support by advertising for the rally in their display windows and donating money. Within a few days around 4,000 leaflets were distributed by the activists and many discussions took place.
On Thursday, 18 September 2003, a rally was held before the Indian Embassy with over 25 people. The protest rally went on for over an hour. During this time, leaflets were passed out and slogans were chanted. After the rally a spontaneous demonstration went from the Embassy to Potsdamer Platz, where another rally took place, and then to Heinrich Platz (in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin). During the demonstration the speeches were held in Turkish and German, reflecting its internationalist character. The slogans were also chanted in different languages, including: "Free Free Free Comrade Gaurav" (in English), "Imperialisten und Reaktion?re H?nde weg von Nepal" (Imperialists and Reaktionaries, Hands off Nepal) and "Yoldas Gaurav`a Özgürlük" (Freedom for Comrade Gaurav).

Once again it has been shown that many people are following the events in the world with great interest and are ready to go into action against all forms of injustice. We consider it important to stress that experience has shown that people are prepared to act against injustice and it is our responsibility to make it possible to collectively transform this determination into action.
